Renewing a library item online
To extend the borrowing period for a library item you have checked out, go to ALICAT and click on the link labeled "Your Library Record." Enter your name and Adelphi University ID number (if you don't know your ID#, click on the link provided on that page to retrieve it). Once you have accessed your library record, you will see a link indicating the number of items you have checked out. Click on that link to display item details. At that point, you will have the option of renewing one or more items by selecting the titles you want to renew and clicking the "Renew Selected" button.

You can renew an item you have checked out within 7 days of its due date. If you attempt to renew prior to that, you will receive notification that you are unable renew at that time.

Alternatively, books may be renewed by bringing them in to any of the four circulation desks (Swirbul, Science, Hauppauge, or Manhattan).

Requesting an interlibrary loan
Fill out and submit an Interlibrary Loan (ILL) request form for items not currently held by the Library and books that you COULD NOT find in CONNECT NY. You can find ILL forms at the Reference Desk or online.

How to read a call number
Books are arranged by call number, in both alphabetical and numerical order. Call numbers appear from top to bottom on the book:

LB
2395
.C648
1991

  • The first letter of the call number represents the subject.
  • The second letter represents a subdivision of that subject.
  • The first set of numbers refers to an area of study within that subdivision.
  • The second set of numbers is a code that represents the author's name, book title, and subject. It should be read as a decimal, i.e., .648.
  • The last number represents the year of publication.

In the example above, L represents education, and LB is theory and practice of education.

Placing an item on reserve or e-reserve for my class
If you are a faculty member and wish an item to be placed on reserve or e-reserve to be made available to your students, please fill out and submit the Swirbul Library Reserve Services Form online. Alternatively, if you would rather print and fill out a copy of the form manually, you can download a fillable PDF form. You can also obtain a form from the Access Services desk at the library.

For E-Reserves, please read about electronic reserves before submitting the form.

Requesting nonprint media or equipment
The nonprint media collection is located at the Access Services desk of the Swirbul Library. The collection includes films, VHS and DVD video recordings, laserdiscs, software, audio cassettes, audio compact discs, filmstrips, slides and CD-ROMS, many with accompanying guides. Our media resources are fully cataloged and can be accessed in ALICAT by subject or keyword, with item descriptions and equipment requirements provided. We deliver and pick up Audio-Visual equipment campus-wide. Please fill out and submit a NonPrint Request Form to reserve equipment for your class, or call Access Services at x3596 for more information.

Submitting suggestions for library acquisitions or services
If you would like to submit a suggestion for the purchase of library material, go to the Books to Acquire page on Alicat. If your request is regarding another aspect of library offerings and services, you can go to the Make a General Suggestion page on Alicat.

Loan rules (how long you have to return an item to the library)

Overdue Charges
Books
There is a grace period of three days for overdue circulating books. After three days there is a charge of $0.10 per day from the date the item was due to the date it is returned. The maximum overdue charge for each circulating book is $15.00.

DVD and Video Cassette Reserve
There is a grace period of one day. After one day, there is a charge of $1.00 per day from the time the item was due. The maximum overdue charge for each reserve item is $15.00. An additional fine of $1.00 per day will be added if the item has been recalled when the item is overdue.

Two-Hour Reserve
There is a grace period of one hour for reserve material. After the one hour, there is a charge of $0.50 per hour from the time the item was due for the first 24 hours. After that, fines will continue to accrue at $1.00 a day. The maximum overdue charge for each Reserve Item is $50.00.

Overnight, Two-Day and Seven-Day Reserve
There is a charge of $1.00 per day from the time the item was due. The maximum overdue charge for each reserve item is $50.00.

How to Return Books
Books may be returned to the circulation desk at Swirbul, to the book slots in the Library, or to the circulation desks of the other University Libraries (Science, Hauppauge, and Manhattan). When Swirbul Library is closed, books may be returned to the outside book drop.

Recalls
All books are subject to recall after 14 days. Visit the Access Services Desk to recall a book currently on loan. When a book has been recalled, the borrower will receive a Recall Notice in the mail, and the book must be returned by the new due date. Charges for overdue recalled books are $1.00 per day.

Lost Materials
Any library material that is lost must be reported immediately. Any library material not returned within a semester after the due date will be declared lost. The borrower will be responsible for the cost of its replacements. The charge is the cost of the item, a $15 processing fee, and the $15 maximum overdue charges. For more information, see Borrowing Privileges.

If an item is found and returned after payment has been made, an adjusted refund is given if a replacement has not been ordered. The adjusted refund is the price of the book and the processing fee.

NOTE: Failure to return library materials or to clear outstanding fines may result in the holding of official transcripts, or diplomas, or the revoking of library privileges.

Damaged or Mutilated Materials
If library material is returned in such poor condition that it can no longer be circulated, the borrower is responsible for replacing the material. The charge to the borrower is the cost of the material plus a $15 processing fee. For faculty, administrators, and staff, go to Borrowing Privileges.

About the electronic resources research lab (Sager Lab)
There is a small lab located on the second floor of Swirbul Library near the Reference Desk. It is called the Sager Lab and is dedicated to electronic resources research. If you want to search for articles in our online databases and journals and think you might need some help navigating these resources, use this lab. Reference librarians are there to assist you.
