How to Read a Call Number |
Most academic libraries use the Library of Congress classification system that assigns a unique call number to each book. A combination of numbers and letters, the call number allows books to be organized by subject matter.
Books are arranged by call number, in both alphabetical and numerical order. Call numbers appear from top to bottom on the book:
LB
2395
.C648
1991
- The first letter of the call number represents the subject.
- The second letter represents a subdivision of that subject.
- The first set of numbers refers to an area of study within that subdivision.
- The second set of numbers is a code that represents the author's name, book title, and subject. It should be read as a decimal, i.e., .648.
- The last number represents the year of publication.
In the example above, L represents education, and LB is theory and practice of education.
Other Numbers The databases may also be searched using other numbers including:
- Non-LC call numbers
- Government Document numbers
- ISBN - International Standard Book Number
- ISSN -International Standard Serial Number
